Thinking About an Angel at Christmas

The Jiggliest Angel

This week 2 years ago was the last good week little Winnie Wiggles had during her three month fight with GME encephalitis. Winnie was my heart, my velcro girl, and my best friend. My fondest hope is that I will see her again someday.

Heavenly Missive

Whippy creme and scrambled eggs are
Way up here in Heaven
In case you too
See only blue and
wonder what you're gettin

They're other things like angel wings
With fur that's never sheddin'.
There's no disease or achin knees
and wrinkles smooth and silken

I fall asleep and dream of you
and times when we were given
to sprint and run and tug on toys
and dash to mom for lovin.

Tonight no tears oh Howie dear
because I have been taken
I’ll kiss your cheek and whiskers sweet
And heal the ache within you.

The pain it fades and goes away
And even loss feels lighter
When time moves on then pushes back
All that separates us.

Ony the Pug - One Step at a time

Ony and Melissa, his foster mom

From Melissa, Ony's Foster Mom:
"Ony grows stronger every day and makes me realize that
hope is always there and to never give up.
I'm not giving up on him no matter what
because he has not given up on me."

Ony the Pug is 7 years old and has a hard time walking and standing up. Ony's family said they were moving and could not take him with them. He came to Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue about a week ago and was taken to our neurologist's office for a myelogram and a CT scan Wednesday. This will tell us if surgery will help him.

Dr. Ducote and her staff were encouraged with the progress Ony has made under his foster mom Melissa's care. He is now standing and walking - or trying to walk. Previously, he was incontinent and now is letting Melissa know when he needs to go out. She carries him out to the grass and he will relieve himself and walk over to the edge of her patio to be let back in. Melissa says he can maneuver on grass better than floors or concrete.

Ony is another little soul who gives those around him courage. We are going to do everything we can to help him get back his quality of life and find a loving home. We are so thankful to Melissa for the love she is giving him in his foster home.

Joshua the Pug - A Miracle Rescue Story

Joshua -- May 2009

Joshua -- June 2009

Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue takes in all pugs regardless of age or medical condition. DFW Pug Rescue volunteers work tirelessly to save every little pug we can. Here is the story of Joshua in the words of his foster mom, Joann. Joshua won her heart and Joann eventually adopted Joshua into her own family.
From Joann

In May I received a call to foster a pug in need. He had demodectic mange, hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms ~ the poor little guy. His name was Joshua and he looked awful. He had no hair, he had scabs everywhere, and he smelled really bad.

When I went to Westcreek and they brought him out, he was so sad looking. All I really saw was the most amazing, beautiful amber eyes asking for love! I took Joshua home and started making him welcome there. He was just a little shy at first, I think he knew how bad he looked and smelled. We did not not care, we started him on his meds and then baths.

He was not making a whole lot of improvement at first and then I thought, because he had developed some secondary infections on his skin, maybe I should just scrub him like a burn patient, so I did. After several scrubbings, the yeast and staph were gone. It left his skin really dry, so we started to bathe him with baby shampoo mixed with olive oil scalp treatment. We were amazed that after two shampoos his hair just started sprouting in so fast that in less than a week he was solid black again. He now has the softest skin and the shiniest coat.

Joshua has turned out to be the most beautiful black boy we had ever seen. He never once fussed about any treatment. He was always laid back and I think almost enjoying the baths and being showered with constant love. Of course, during all this treatment, we fell in love with little Joshua and chose to adopt him and make him a huge part of our family. He will be loved and taken care of like he deserves and will never have to go through all that again.

After many trips to the vet he is the best pug ever! We want to thank DFW Pug Rescue for saving Joshua and so many other poor pugs. If it were not for them many, many pugs would not be saved.

Blessed - Howie Lost, Then Found

Howard Pee Pugpants
Adventure Pug by Day,
Snoozer Pug by Night

Howie slipped through the interior slatted fence yesterday and darted out of the yard while we were having repairwork done on our exterior fence. He was headed up the block toward a busy street when our neighbor, Alan, saw him. Alan had a treat in his hand and lured Howie over and grabbed his collar just as Carlos (Howie's dad) was running in their direction.

Needless to say, we are blessed this easter. Losing Howie's sister Winnie was the hardest thing ever last year, to encephalitis. I am thanking every angel in heaven today that our wonderful neighbor was watching out for us, and for Howie yesterday.

But that's not where the story ends. This morning, one day after Howie was returned safely home, I opened my studio blinds and saw a little Schnauzer in the rain, headed up the same block all by himself. I went outside quickly and walked briskly toward him and past him at an angle, acting casual so he would not be afraid and run. My goal, first, was to get him to head in the opposite direction, away from the busy street he was moving toward. My second goal was to catch him if I could. And he came right to me.

He was shivering and wet in my arms and listened quietly as I talked to him. I rang several doorbells up and down the street, but no one knew the little fellow. He had no ID tags, except for a Banfield vet clinic 800 number tag which no one answers on a Sunday and there was no answering machine.

So the little friendly schnauzer who has no nametag or ID is resting quietly in a crate, waiting to go to my vet's office in the morning. They will scan him for an identichip and then take him to the Flower Mound Shelter. We are fortunate to have a shelter that has a very high reunion rate and a very high adoption rate. As friendly and well behaved as this little boy is, I know he will be okay.

One good turn deserves another, yes? So if the angels who were watching over my little Howard yesterday for me are listening now, thank you for letting me pay someone back by finding their baby today. I am so hopeful he will be reunited with his family tonight.

A New Blog for Rescue Pugs

Frito went to the Rainbow Bridge after spending her
last years in the loving home of a pug rescuer in Houston.
She was a shining star for rescue and we sure hope she is
watching over us still!

I launched a new blog this week for Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue and I sure hope all my puggy friends will visit and let me know what you think! We are gearing up for Pugoween, the biggest pug event in Texas and our annual fundraiser. I posted a few pictures of some absolute cuteypugs in costume from last year on the new blog. I will do my best to make sure Howie behaves himself and shows some respect when I am blogging with my rescue hat on. He has already corrupted at least 6 foster pugs by showing them how to pee on inanimate household appliances in the Medina Foster Home for Wayward Pugs.

The Story of Mister Pug

When I arrived at Foster Mom's house she said I was very
skinny, but I had a scandalously handsome smile.

I made some new friends.

One of them, Howard Pee Pugpants,
was a very bad influence.

These were just laying around
everywhere, so I grabbed one!

One day, Foster Mom said it was time
to meet my furever family.

Pugs in the mirror...are closer than they appear!

Someone has posted a welcome sign in my honor!

My new family was very excited to meet me,
and who can blame them?

Now I've pretty much got the pawfect life. Foster
mom misses me and thinks of me often. She hums this
little song when she thinks of me.

I'm Just a Sack o Bones...

I'm just a little sack o bones.......
Just looking for a home.............
Yes I'm just a sack o bones........
Just waiting by the phone.........
For the family who will be.........
Forever love to little me.........
Cuz I'm just a sack o bones........
Just waitin for a home..............

I've got some knobbley little knees...
And a tail that's very waggley...
I've got some skinny little fleas....
and a coat that's kinda scraggley....

If you see a sack o bones....
Who is lookin for a home..........
Pick him up and hold him near....
And then just whisper in his ear......

I love you little sack o bones.....
I love you little sack o bones.....
I love you little sack o bones....
Just lookin for a home.....
